Episode 3 - The Storm Breaks

Podcast episode 3, show episode 2.

Yeah the war is in full swing.

The evacuation act is probably one of the stronger bits of the series to me.  It has the tension of just travelling through a war zone, plus, you know, freaking actual Nazis. Byron and Slote are both pretty great in this bit.  At first of course Slote is a foppish twit.  But, he redeems himself with that Nazi bastard who looks like Putin.  Oh, umm, hey, show, Canadians wouldn't be evacuated with the neutrals.  We were at war with Poland.

Palmer Kirby makes his move in a way.  Rhoda gives a 'problematic' (as the kids say) performance.  I like the two characters, I just don't like them together.

Pug has met FDR and Harry Hopkins.  Ken and I agree that casting is perfect for Hopkins.  (We watched it together texting, I have no idea what Steve thinks, and I write these things in advance).

Byron goes to Germany!

Aaron Jastrow is the most annoying character in the history of dramatic irony.

Episode 2 - The Winds Rise

Which of course is episode one of the series.

We hit the ground running, or sailing across the Atlantic, with Pug and Rhoda.

Rhoda's biggest concern is where to get her next drink, and when she can meet Hitler.  Well wasn't that nice of Hitler to help them find a place to live!

The whole Rosenthal scene is heartbreaking, and maddening.

I'm not sure I'd get into a car with Pamela Tudsbury.

If Byron is 24 I'm 18.

Nathalie, ok, maybe she is 30, I can sorta buy that.

John Houseman will make you EARN your money by rescuing him from crazy horses in Sienna.

Man that wedding scene, so joyous and wonderful and full of horrible dramatic irony.

The refugee scene, to me, is evoking the pic I've used for today's post.

Episode 1 - Our Remembrances of Winds

Hey, it's a new podcast!

Steve, Ken and I are all history nerds, and WW2 nerds and even one of us did his PhD on a war poet.

We all love tv because we are humans.

We decided then that we three have to do something, and what better than oh say the entirety of WW2 in a tv show?  Well how about two tv shows!

What are our remembrances?

What are yours?

What's up with the casting?

Clean Wehrmacht myth shows up a lot in the show, though with some nuance.

Once we get to War and Remembrance things get, well, very unpleasant.  I like this, because WW2 was not fun.
